Free Chunky Crocheted Bowl Pattern

CHUNKY CROCHETED BOWL:

I love this little one; not hard, but if you've never worked on heavy textiles in crochet before, it seems mysterious. And I love the tweedy, homey look!! These bowls are flexible but strong! They can hold balls of yarn, keys, toys, whatever you like, just probably not gooshy food items, hah!

Here's the pattern: Work with a quadruple strand of medium weight yarn (four strands held together and used like one!) and WITH A SIZE K HOOK (u.s.) work ch 3, sl st to form a small ring.

I won't state this in rounds because it's really intuitive: 

Work a sc circle in a spiral to your desired bowl diameter:

Your first round will be as many sc as you can fit nicely into the beginning ring. Instead of joining, just start sc's of the second round right on top of your beginning point, working in a spiral.

Your second "round" will be working ( sc, 2sc)  all around the circle, then continue in a spiral instead of joining (you'll need to mark your beginning point with a pin since you are working in a spiral, with no seam and no joining).

Your third "round" will be working sc around, with 2sc in every third sc. 

Your fourth "round" will be working sc around, with 2sc in every fourth sc.

You see where I'm going here....this is simply working sc in the round, increasing as needed to keep your circle flat. You may need to adjust the increases so your stitches don't get too crowded. Use your judgment and make a nice flat circle!

Continue to make a chunky circle to your desired diameter for your bowl. (Actually stop when you're within an inch of your desired diameter, because it will continue to enlarge as you begin on the walls)

To start forming the walls, simply sc in every sc around, continuing to work in a spiral. One tip: Working with the bowl cupped inward (instead of bowing outward like it will be when it's used) makes it much easier to work.

If you wish to make the bowl slope inward, you can do a round or two decreasing every 6th or 7th stitch. Experiment and have fun with it. 

To end your bowl, work 2 or 3 slip stitches instead of sc's and tie off. Tightly pull the end of your work so the last stitch is small and weave the ends through your work for one stitch; then knot your yarns and securely hide and sew down the tail end.

Use your sock yarn for a Bitty Preemie Hat!

Susan's Preemie Hat Pattern on Etsy   This one is just simple and stretchy. You need smaller stitches for those tiny little preemie heads, so warm and peach fuzzy...it looks funny to put a big chunky double crocheted cap on a preemie, so this one is done in hdc with that fine textured stretchy sock cotton. Those cool sock designs are so funky looking, they almost look guatamalan when you add that notch deep sc on the edge. Very up to date and international looking, don't you think? Yeah! I love crochet!!! This partitcular pattern is part of my larger baby cap pattern, and it comes with 4 extra flower patterns which can be sewn on.

my baby cap has had a tweak this week to make it easier and give it an extra flower choice! Yay! Work this little baby crochet pattern in cotton for a breezy, soft, summery beach cap for baby. A new crocheted Goldfish Edging and my Darling Betta!

I just finished a little bitty pattern, perfect for a burp cloth. Preferably a blue burp cloth, with those orange goldfish swimming along the edges, too much cuteness!
I finally worked out my Betta Fish applique, too, only it's a little different in fin shape from the typical betta. But a fun one nevertheless, you can see the fish pattern which includes both at my Etsy Crochet Store

My 3-6 month Newsboy....whew! Coming soon in Hot Pink and Gold!!

This little darling was a labor of love, for a friends' baby...and I must say, I was happy with how it turned out. It's more like a Greek Fisherman's Cap than a Newsboy, but both have that poochy shape and the bill. I put a decorative chain stitch across the band in lieu of a detachable band, and am SO VERY PROUD of my baby-safe faux "button" on the top. If baby chews it, it just ravels and shreds at worst, because it's crocheted right onto the cap, not formed and then sewn on.

Only a 3-6 month size right now, am working on two other sizes and hope to expand the pattern's utility by that....that's why it's only $2.50 right now. Hah!

I love this stitch, remember it?

My husband's old fire chief's invalid wife taught me this stitch about thirty years ago. Jeez, that makes me old. I love mixing these long double crochets with regular stitches, so very easy and nice and nubby. Doesn't have to be all complicated or snooty, just interesting and simple.

Nuts about Flowers and Baby Stuff

Okay, another day of running around, shipping packages, getting ready for a refi, and planning my next crochet project!! The main subject of this goofy photo is a baby headband I hope to have the pattern written for by tonight, flower and all. But I might have to make an even bigger and floppier flower as an alternate, there's something so irresistable about a baby with a big flower on its head. Wow, sounds very strange in print, but make-your-tummy-flop happy about it in real life.
